What Are Cataracts?
Cataracts occur when the lens of the eye becomes cloudy, leading to impaired vision or even blindness. The lens, which is normally clear, helps focus light onto the retina. When cataracts form, this process is disrupted, making it harder for your dog to see clearly. Cataracts can develop slowly over time or appear suddenly, depending on the underlying cause.
Small Dog Breeds Prone to Cataracts
While cataracts can affect any dog, some small breeds are more susceptible, including:
-
Poodles (Toy and Miniature)
-
Bichon Frises
-
Yorkshire Terriers
-
Shih Tzus
-
Cocker Spaniels
-
Chihuahuas
-
Maltese
These breeds are genetically predisposed to developing cataracts, making regular eye exams especially important.
